A weak heart makes a suffering brain

Heart health and brain health may be more closely connected than we realize. Research from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) suggests that heart problems may affect gene activity in the brain’s memory center, potentially contributing to cognitive difficulties.

Laboratory studies indicate that reduced heart function can influence processes in the brain that are important for memory and learning. These findings may help explain why people with certain heart conditions can have a higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

The research highlights the importance of looking at cardiovascular health as part of overall brain health. Maintaining a healthy heart through regular medical care, physical activity, a balanced diet, and management of conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes may also support long-term brain health.

While further research is needed to understand the connection fully, the findings reinforce an important message: taking care of your heart may also be an important part of taking care of your brain.
